Diversity... The Bridge between the Workplace and the Marketplace
IBM Recognizes Awareness of Employment of People with Disabilities Month in October.

Inclusion has been an integral part of our corporate culture.
"The marketplace is the driving force behind everything we do," helps us to understand that the global marketplace is increasingly made up of different people from different backgrounds and lifestyles. All of these people are either current or potential customers of IBM. It is important that we have people from all groups who can help us understand them and demonstrate that people like them work for IBM. This IBM principle led to the development of our key concept, "Workforce Diversity is the Bridge Between the Workplace and the Marketplace."

October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month. IBM has had a long-standing commitment to diversity. In 1914, IBM hired the first employee with a disability; this was 59 years before the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and 76 years before the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

In the U.S. there are five Network Groups for Employees with Disabilities. There is also one in Australia. We have three Forums - Blind/Visually Impaired, Deaf and Hard of Hearing, and Mobility.
